Requirements for the Degree of Lector

 

  • RUGA Auditor Degree

  • 3 General Classes:

Research Basics (SCA03A05)

Documentation Basics

Choose one (1) from the following list:

Costuming Survey - 600-1600 A.D. (COS02A02)

Beginning SCA Dance (PER05A02)

Teaching Tips & Techniques (SCA03A02)

Finding Your SCA Niche (SCA03A03)

  • 8 Classes in Specialty Area

Students must choose an area in which to specialize. This can be a specific subject (i.e., clothing, cooking, textiles, dance, etc.), a College or Department, or a specific time period. Only classes in this specialty area will count towards this requirement.

  • 4 elective classes

May be from any College or Department.

  • 1 Independent Study Project

Choose one of the following*:

  1. A&S Project. Research, prepare and complete a project of the student’s choosing in the student’s specialty area. Project and documentation should be submitted to RUGA staff or a Laurel for examination in order to receive credit. Proof of Completion: Signature/certification of examiner and a brief statement of what the student learned from doing the project (no more than 1 page).  Special Honors: Enter the project in a formal,  judged A&S competition (copy of judging or entry sheet is proof of entry)

  2. Teaching. Research, prepare and teach a class on a subject of the student’s choice in the student’s specialty area. Class preparation should include preparation of a class handout and other class materials (i.e., photographs, items to be shared with the class, etc.). Proof of Completion: Copy of handouts/class materials OR class enrollment sheet OR copies of the teacher evaluation forms.  Special Honors: Submit the class for RUGA registration (no proof needed, just notate student record)

  3. Written Expression I. Research and write an article on a subject of the student’s choosing.  Proof of completion: Copy of article. Special Honors: Submit the article to any SCA publication. (i.e. local newsletter, Ceachtanna, Tournaments Illuminated, Compleat Anachronist, etc.). The publication does not have to be in general circulation in the student’s home kingdom, but must be a general circulation publication. The article may be of any length. (Proof would be a copy of the submission letter or published article)

  4. Written Expression II. Research and complete a research paper on a subject of the student’s choice in the student’s emphasis area. Research papers must follow the Kingdom A&S scholarly writing guidelines, and be no less than three (3) pages in length.  Proof of completion: copy of the paper. Special Honors: Paper of seven (7) or more pages in length.

*Students may substitute 4 extra elective classes for this requirement.
